How they work

One handle, two completely different openings

Tilt and turn hardware is the cleverest thing in a window. Standard across much of Europe, and it solves two problems at once.

Handle horizontal and the sash swings fully inwards on side hinges, like a door. That’s the position for cleaning the outside face, for moving something large through, and for escape.

Handle vertical and the same sash tilts in from the bottom, so the top edge leans into the room a few inches. Air moves through at high level while the sash stays held along both sides and the bottom.

  • Tilt position for secure, draught-free ventilation
  • Turn position for cleaning, access and escape
  • No sash swinging outwards over a path or balcony
  • Multi-point locking engaged in both closed and tilted positions

Benefits

Where tilt and turn earns its place

  • Ventilate securely

Leave a room airing with only a narrow opening at high level, sash still held by the hardware.

  • Clean from inside

Swing the sash in and reach the outside of the glass without ladders or a cleaner.

  • Nothing projects outwards

Ideal above a path, a driveway, a balcony or anywhere an outward sash would be in the way.

  • Two levels of airflow

A gentle background trickle or a full opening, from the same handle.

  • Heavy-duty hardware

Built to carry and locate a large sash accurately through both movements.

  • Well sealed when shut

The sash compresses onto seals all the way round in the closed position.

Worth knowing

The one thing to plan for

Tilt and turn windows open into the room. That’s the trade-off for everything else they do well.

Fully open, the sash needs clear space in front of it — so think about what sits below. Above a worktop, a radiator, a sill full of plants or a desk, an inward-opening sash can be awkward.

In practice most people use the tilt position day to day and only turn it for cleaning, which makes it a non-issue in most rooms. We’ll flag anywhere a different style would work better at survey.

Ask us a question

How does a tilt and turn window work?

One handle, two positions. Turn it a quarter and the sash tilts inwards from the bottom, opening a few inches at the top for ventilation. Turn it further and the whole sash swings inwards on side hinges like a door, for cleaning or escape.

Are tilt and turn windows secure when tilted?

Yes — that’s the main reason people choose them. In the tilt position the sash is still held by the hardware along the sides and bottom, with only a narrow gap at the top. You can leave a room ventilated without leaving an accessible opening.

Do they take up space inside the room?

In the fully open turn position the sash swings into the room, so you need clear space in front of it — worth thinking about above a kitchen worktop, a radiator or a desk. In the tilt position, which is how they’re used most of the time, it barely intrudes at all.

Are they good for flats and upper floors?

They’re the standard choice for apartments, because you can clean the outside of the glass from inside the room. That makes them practical anywhere access from outside is difficult — upper storeys, over a conservatory roof, or above a busy pavement.

What materials do they come in?

We fit tilt and turn windows in uPVC and aluminium. Aluminium suits larger tilt and turn sashes particularly well because the frame can carry the weight without bulking up.
