Why the base matters

A floor is only as flat as what is under it

Every problem people have with a new floor — the bounce, the click, the gap that opens at the edge — comes from the layer nobody looked at.

Old boards move, screeds dip and vinyl leaves ridges. Lay a rigid floor straight over any of it and the dips telegraph through within a year, or the joints start to lift.

Levelling, screeding or overboarding first is not an upsell. It is the part of the job that decides whether the floor still looks right in five years.

  • Subfloors surveyed before anything is quoted
  • Levelling compound, screed or overboarding as needed
  • Underfloor heating accommodated where present
  • Skirtings, thresholds and trims finished properly

Options

What we lay

  • Engineered wood

Real timber wear layer on a stable core, so it copes with heat and moisture.

  • LVT

Hard wearing and warm underfoot, in plank or tile formats and patterns.

  • Laminate

The economical option, and much better than it used to be if specified well.

  • Tiling

Porcelain and ceramic, set out so cuts land where they are least visible.

  • Underfloor heating

Floors specified to work with it rather than insulate against it.

  • Trims and thresholds

Junctions and doorways finished rather than left with a strip of tape.

Worth knowing

Herringbone costs more for a reason

Pattern laying is a different job from plank laying, and the difference is mostly time.

Herringbone and chevron need setting out from a centre line, cutting at every perimeter and far more waste. On the same room it can take twice as long as straight planks.

It is worth it — nothing else looks like it. But it should be priced as what it is at the outset rather than treated as a finish option.

Questions

Flooring questions

Can’t see what you need? Call 01342 410079 and we’ll answer it properly.

Ask us a question

Do you supply the flooring or do I?

Either. We can supply and lay, or fit a floor you have bought. If you are supplying it, order enough for waste — pattern layouts need considerably more than straight planks.

Do I need the subfloor levelling?

Often, yes. We check it at survey and tell you plainly. Skipping it is the single most common reason a new floor disappoints within a year.

Can you lay over underfloor heating?

Yes, but the floor has to be specified for it. Some engineered boards and most LVT are fine; thick solid timber generally is not.

Can you take up the old floor?

Yes, including disposal. Old adhesive and screed removal is the part that takes the time, so it gets priced separately rather than assumed.

Do you do stairs?

Yes — stair cladding, carpet to timber conversions and matching a landing to the floor below.
