Why the base

Everything that sinks was under-dug

A driveway that ruts where the wheels go, or a patio that dips by the door, is a base problem every time.

A drive carrying cars needs considerably more excavation and sub-base than a patio carrying a table. Skimp on the depth and it looks perfect for a summer, then follows the tyre tracks down.

We dig to the depth the use requires, compact in layers and build up properly. It is most of the labour on the job and none of what you see at the end.

  • Excavated to a depth suited to the load
  • Sub-base compacted in layers
  • Edge restraints so the surface cannot spread
  • Levels set to fall away from the house

Surfaces

What we lay

  • Block paving

Hard wearing, repairable a block at a time, and available in many patterns.

  • Resin bound

Seamless and permeable, so it drains through rather than running off.

  • Natural slabs

Sandstone, limestone and porcelain for patios and paths.

  • Edgings and kerbs

Restraints that stop the surface creeping and spreading over time.

  • Drainage

Channel drains, soakaways and permeable surfaces as the site needs.

  • Steps and retaining

Level changes handled with proper steps and retaining rather than fudged.

Worth knowing

Where the rainwater goes is now regulated

Front gardens cannot simply be paved over and drained to the road any more.

Surfacing more than five square metres of front garden with an impermeable material needs the water dealt with on your own land, or it needs planning permission. A permeable surface or a soakaway satisfies it.

We design the drainage into the job from the start. It is not an extra and it is not something to discover after the drive is laid.

Driveway and patio questions

Ask us a question

Do I need planning permission for a driveway?

If you are surfacing more than five square metres of front garden with something impermeable and draining it to the road, yes. A permeable surface or a soakaway avoids it, and we design that in.

Why do driveways sink?

Almost always because the base was too shallow or not compacted in layers. A drive carrying cars needs far more sub-base than a patio, and that is where corners get cut.

Block paving or resin?

Block is repairable a unit at a time and available in many patterns. Resin is seamless, permeable and quicker to lay but harder to patch invisibly. We will talk through both.

Can you handle a sloping garden?

Yes — steps, retaining and level changes designed properly rather than fudged with a steeper fall than anyone wants to walk on.

Do you take the old surface away?

Yes, excavation and disposal are part of the quote rather than an extra line you find later.
