Why aluminium

Strength is the whole point

Aluminium is structurally stronger than uPVC or timber, which means the frame can be much thinner and still hold a large, heavy sealed unit.

That difference shows up as daylight. In the same opening, an aluminium frame gives you a noticeably bigger area of glass than a plastic one — which is why it dominates on extensions, garden rooms and anywhere with a view worth framing.

It also holds a crisp, square edge that suits modern architecture, and it will span heights and widths that other materials struggle with. Gable and apex glazing is a job aluminium does particularly well.

  • Slim sightlines and large panes
  • Powder-coated finish that won’t need repainting
  • Ideal for extensions, gables and garden rooms
  • Matching windows, doors and bifolds in one finish

Under the surface

What’s inside an aluminium frame

The thermal break is the part that matters — without it, metal frames conduct cold straight into the room. Hover a number to see each part.

  • Two-part frameSeparate outer and inner sections, so the metal facing the weather never touches the metal facing the room.
  • Powder-coated finishBaked on rather than painted, which is why aluminium never needs repainting.
  • Glazing gasketA continuous seal grips the glass on both faces within a very slim rebate.
  • Sealed double glazed unitSlim frames mean more of the opening is glass, so the unit does more of the work.
  • Warm-edge spacerSeparates the panes and holds the desiccant that keeps the cavity dry.
  • Polyamide thermal breakAn insulating bar between the two halves. Without it the metal would carry the cold straight through.

Benefits

What aluminium gives you

  • More daylight

Narrower frames mean a bigger area of glass in exactly the same opening.

  • Very strong

Spans larger openings and carries heavier units without flexing.

  • Powder-coated colour

A baked-on finish in a wide range of colours, different inside and out if you want.

  • Thermally broken

An insulating barrier through the frame stops cold transferring inside.

  • Low maintenance

No repainting and no swelling — wash it down and it’s done.

  • Highly recyclable

Aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without losing its properties.

Questions

Aluminium window questions

Ask us a question

Aren’t aluminium windows cold?

Old ones were — bare metal conducts heat straight through the frame, which is why single-glazed aluminium windows from the seventies streamed with condensation. Modern frames have a thermal break: an insulating barrier separating the inside section from the outside one, so the cold has nowhere to travel.

Why choose aluminium over uPVC?

Strength. Aluminium holds a large pane with a much narrower frame, so you get more glass and more daylight in the same opening. It’s the usual choice for extensions, gable glazing and anywhere the view matters.

What colours can I have?

Powder-coated finishes come in a wide range, with anthracite grey and black by far the most popular. You can also have a different colour inside and out — dark grey externally with white or grey internally is a common combination.

Does the powder coating fade or chip?

A factory-applied powder coat is baked on and is considerably tougher than paint. It won’t need recoating, and it holds its colour well. Wash it down like you would any other window.

Can aluminium windows match my bifold or patio doors?

Yes, and it’s worth doing. Specifying windows and doors in the same finish keeps the elevation consistent — we regularly fit matching aluminium windows alongside aluminium doors on the same project.
