Bargeboards: the first thing to go
The boards running up the slope of a gable take more weather than anything else on the house — and they are the most visible when they fail.
- Old boards stripped rather than capped
- Timber behind repaired where it has gone
- Matched to the fascias and guttering

Why they fail
Nothing on the house is more exposed
A bargeboard sits on the slope of the gable with weather hitting it from above, in front and both sides. Paint gives up there first.
Once the paint goes the timber takes up water, and because the board is fixed against the roof structure the rot spreads into the rafter and the batten ends behind it.
Replacing in uPVC ends the cycle. But it only works if the old board comes off and what is behind gets looked at, which is the step the cheapest quotes leave out.
- Old boards stripped, not capped over
- Roof timbers behind inspected and repaired
- Profiles and colours matched to the fascias
- Dry verge and cloaked verge options

Worth knowing
Mortar verges crack, dry verges do not
If the mortar along the edge of your gable tiles is cracking and dropping out, that is worth dealing with at the same time.
A mortar-bedded verge is doing a job that mortar is bad at — flexing with the roof through every temperature change. It cracks, water gets behind it and the tiles at the edge start to lift.
A dry verge system clips over the tile ends and is mechanically fixed, so there is nothing to crack. Fitting it while the bargeboards are off costs very little extra.

Rooftrim
The rest of the roofline
Bargeboards, fascias, soffits and guttering are one job in practice.

Cladding
uPVC and composite cladding that covers a tired elevation and never needs painting again.

Soffits and Fascias
The boards behind your guttering. Replace them and the whole roofline looks new — and stops rotting.

Guttering and Downpipes
Seamless replacement guttering sized for the roof, so water goes where it should rather than down the wall.

Bargeboards
The boards up the slope of a gable. Usually the first rooftrim to fail, and the most visible when it does.
