Why a sun room
Light at eye level, not overhead
Overhead glass is what makes a room unbearable in July. Take it away and keep the glazing at the sides, and the room works.
A sun room puts the daylight where you actually experience it — across the view, at the height you sit — while an insulated roof keeps the summer sun and the winter cold out of the top of the room.
It is the answer for a south or west-facing elevation where a fully glazed roof would turn the space into somewhere you avoid for three months of the year.
- Solid insulated roof, plastered and painted inside
- Glazing concentrated on the garden elevations
- Bifold, sliding or French doors onto the garden
- Rooflights available where you want overhead light

Benefits
What a sun room gives you
Light at eye level
Glazing across the view rather than over your head, where it is comfortable.
No summer greenhouse
A solid roof is the single biggest thing you can do about overheating.
Quiet in the rain
An insulated roof takes the noise out of a downpour completely.
A proper ceiling
Plastered and painted, with downlights, exactly like the rest of the house.
Rooflights if you want them
Controlled overhead light without glazing the whole roof.

Everything we supply and install is covered, and we’re Certass registered.
Worth knowing
Which way does it face?
Orientation matters more for a sun room than for anything else we build, and it should decide the specification.
A north-facing room needs all the daylight it can get, so more glass and possibly a rooflight. A south or west-facing one needs the opposite — solid overhead, solar-controlled glass and something to shade the low evening sun.
We look at which way the elevation faces and what is around it before recommending a specification, rather than fitting the same room whichever way it points.

Other rooms
Sure a sun room is the right route?
They overlap and the names get used loosely. Here is what each of the others really means.

Conservatories
The most glass for the money, and the quickest way to add a room. Modern roofs mean they work all year rather than just in spring.
Explore conservatories
Orangeries
Brick piers, a flat perimeter roof and a glazed lantern over the middle. Reads as part of the house rather than bolted onto it.

Extensions
A full masonry room built to match the house — foundations, walls, roof, glazing and the making good afterwards.
Explore extensions
Garden Rooms
An insulated, solid-roofed room you can use in February. Somewhere between a conservatory and an extension, at a price to match.

Verandas
A glazed roof over a terrace or decking. Shelter without enclosing anything, so you use the garden for more of the year.
