The brief

An old house with awkward openings

Nothing on a house like this is a standard size. The windows sit in arched brick openings over a sandstone plinth, with a mature wisteria trained across the front, so every frame had to be measured for its own opening and fitted around what was already there.

The job was to replace all twenty-two windows and the doors without losing the character: small panes, proper bars, and handles that suit a period property.

What we did

Bars on the glass, not just in it

Astragal bars are fixed to both faces of the glass, with a spacer between the panes behind them. From any distance the window reads as separate small panes, the way an original would, while the unit itself is a single modern double-glazed one.

Both stable doors split at the middle rail, so the top can stand open while the bottom stays shut. One is white and half glazed, with bars to match the window beside it. The other, on the weatherboarded building, is a pale stone colour with a single small pane.

Scope of works

  • Supplied and fitted 2 stable doors
  • Replaced a pair of French doors

What made the difference

Three things worth knowing about this job

  • Astragal bars

Fixed inside and out, so each window reads as small panes.

  • Two stable doors

Top half open for air, bottom half shut.

  • Measured one at a time

Arched brick heads and stone sills, each a different size.
