The brief

Modern at the back, original at the front

The back of this house has been rebuilt around glass: two gables glazed right up to the apex, doors on the first floor and a wide run of glazed doors below. The frames needed to be slim enough to carry all of it.

The front is a different matter. It is brick, with its original proportions, so the one new window there is timber, made to match what was already in the wall.

What we did

Aluminium where the glass is biggest

Aluminium is the natural choice for glazing like this. It is strong enough to carry shaped panes right up to the apex on slim frames, and the black finish is powder coated, so it never needs painting.

Inside, the vaulted room now looks straight down the garden through two apex windows over two sets of doors. The photographs were taken with the scaffolding still up and the room unplastered — the glazing goes in before the finishes do.
