The brief

A good building let down by its joinery

The summer house itself was sound: timber walls, a hipped shingle roof and a solid base on the patio. The windows and double doors were not. Years of weather had lifted the paint along the bottom of the doors, which is where timber joinery always goes first.

Replacing the building would have been a waste. We took out the old frames and fitted new ones into the openings that were already there.

What we did

Same openings, new frames

The new windows are white PVCu in a sculptured profile, with Georgian bars across each pane so the building keeps a traditional look. The double doors became a pair of French doors with clear glass, which lets more light into the room.

None of it needs painting again. The frames wipe clean, and the doors now close and lock the way a house door does.

What made the difference

Three things worth knowing about this job

  • The building stayed

New frames went into the existing openings — nothing was rebuilt.

  • Nothing left to paint

PVCu in place of timber that needed regular repainting.

  • Georgian bars

Small panes on every window, to suit a traditional summer house.
